FROM STRATEGY & STORYBOARDS THROUGH SCRIPTING, PRODUCTION & POST
While I learned to edit in 1984 (a 3/4-inch A-B Roll system), I did not write my first video until 1986. Since then I've written and produced hundreds of video modules, training films, commercials and industrials. The work has won many awards, including Gold at the 1991 New York International Film Festival and two Telly Awards in 2012 . The awards are nice, but the happy clients are the best reward.

General Motors international operations wanted to introduce NASCAR to the Chinese audience at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show. I was selected to research, write and produce the project. Among the challenges was bridging the cultural and language gaps to tell a uniquely regional American story. I used two translation services simultaneously to ensure accuracy and good story telling from English to Mandarin. Produced for a 4-screen array by NASCAR Productions.

Chevrolet media events for the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas have been a major focus of mine since 2012. I've written presentations every year, and from 2012-17, wrote and helped produce hour-long business media events that introduced over a dozen concept vehicles at each event. Videos help introduce each vehicle, and this one is for a performance concept of the all-electric Spark. Shot by Bob Gothro with post production by Switch Post, Royal Oak, MI.

GM World is a 40,000 square-foot experiential space at General Motors' global HQ in Detroit. Jack Morton Worldwide has produced multiple installations for the space, and I've been responsible for researching, writing and producing multiple elements. This video, presented on free-standing 32:9 monitors, supported the GM Zero Zero Zero initiative, and showcased how autonomous vehicles have been a foundation of GM's vision for 60+ years. The all-new 2013 Lincoln MKZ introduced the concept of a panoramic retractable roof at the 2012 New York auto show. However, there were no available examples of the car to demonstrate the feature. 3D animation was the answer. Newsflash: The Car Guy can create videos for non-automotive clients. In this case, a product is for assisted-living facilities. I performed the role of Concept Developer/Writer/CD for this freelance project. I recommended animation primarily for of its storytelling power and value for our client's production dollar. The talented and experienced producer, Steve Leslie, accepted my recommendation for VO talent; my long-time cohort and legendary Detroit DJ, Lynne Woodison. Animation and post by Ben Sanders. |
